Chattanooga to Tails Creek Valley
A Weekend Getaway from Chattanooga That's Somehow Closer Than the Smokies
About 1 hour 15 minutes south on I-75 and GA-515 — private cabin on 50+ acres in the Blue Ridge foothills.
Quick answer
The Barn at Haynes Hill sits about 75 minutes south of Chattanooga in the Tails Creek Valley near Ellijay, GA — closer than most Chattanooga weekend guests realize. Fifty-plus private acres, three bedrooms plus a bunk room, a fishing pond and hiking trails on the property, an outdoor fire pit, panoramic Blue Ridge Mountain views. Direct-book only, owner-operated. Downtown Ellijay is 10-15 minutes; downtown Blue Ridge is 25. See the property, check availability, or read the luxury cabin rental overview.
The Chattanooga-to-North-Georgia drive
Chattanooga's best mountain-cabin market isn't in Tennessee — it's the North Georgia foothills to the south. The Smokies are two hours north and packed; the Cherohala Skyway is a scenic detour with limited lodging; and the Chattanooga-adjacent Tennessee cabins tend to cluster on top of each other. Coming south lands you in the Blue Ridge foothills with more privacy, better wineries, and a genuinely different feel.
The route from downtown Chattanooga is I-75 south into Georgia, then GA-52/GA-515 east through Ellijay. About 1 hour 15 minutes without traffic. Friday afternoons add 15-20 minutes; Sunday mornings are usually clean. The last stretch — once 515 hands off to the smaller roads heading toward Tails Creek — is the part that resets you.
If you're weighing a cabin rental in Ellijay GA against your usual Chattanooga weekend spots, the trade is worth making. More privacy, fewer crowds, and the wineries and orchards this side of the border are legitimately world-class.
What Chattanooga guests come here for
Real privacy
50+ private acres, no neighbors in sight or sound. Denser 'secluded' cabins in the Tennessee market sit on 3-5 acres.
The North Georgia wine trail
Engelheim, Cartecay, Cartecay River Vineyards, Ott Farms — all within 20 minutes. Tennessee's wine scene doesn't match it yet.
Direct-book only
No Airbnb, no VRBO, no aggregator service fees. Book direct with the owner and pay less.
Toccoa + Lake Blue Ridge
The Toccoa River is 30 minutes; Lake Blue Ridge is 30. Kayak, tube, fish, or paddleboard depending on the day.
Blue Ridge Scenic Railway
25 minutes to downtown Blue Ridge. The train, East Main Street, tasting rooms, restaurants.
Quiet nights
Dark sky over the Tails Creek Valley — Milky Way visible on clear nights. Rare to find close to any major city.
A weekend from Chattanooga, in outline
Friday. Leave downtown Chattanooga by 4 PM to beat the tail end of the Atlanta commuters on I-75. Stop in Ellijay for provisions on the way in. Arrive before sunset, fire pit, exhale.
Saturday. Pick one big experience. Two wineries with lunch on a patio. Or the Toccoa River (tubing Memorial Day–Labor Day; fly fishing year-round). Or the train from Blue Ridge (four-hour round-trip to McCaysville). End downtown for dinner.
Sunday. Slow morning on the deck. Brunch in town. Back to Chattanooga by mid-afternoon.
